September 2025.

The theme of recent News entries has been ‘pathways’. I continue to think of this experience, but along with its inherent dimension of time: thus ‘from here to there’ (which may be to an unknown or a return) and its inevitable accompaniment, ‘now and then’ or ‘now and next’. I have wanted to capture this, in one way, in a kind of stop-frame approach to the movement along a path – for example the three small paintings ‘Step One’, ‘Step Two’ and’ Step Three’- and, in a related work (in progress), the approach across the top of one field to the wide scenic opening of another.

I have at the same time wanted to follow these themes of time and place in marking the passing seasons of favourite trees and pairs of trees in Ringmer which I encounter on walks (pathways) on Green Lane and Potato Lane – a name itself with its own past. These and other trees, and fields and lanes too, have their own wider context – not only the passing and returning seasons but the changes around them as Ringmer is dragged, protesting, by speculators and new builds from its character as a rural village to that of an inadequately supported small town – not a pathway of most residents’ own choosing.
